Why DDP Is Rarely the Right Answer in South America

DDP looks attractive to a buyer because it converts a complex import into a single delivered price. It is nonetheless a poor fit for this region, for five structural reasons.

  • The importer of record must usually be a locally registered entity. In Brazil the importer must hold a local tax registration and RADAR habilitation. A foreign seller without a Brazilian legal entity cannot simply act as importer, so DDP would require a nominated local importer, which reintroduces the complexity DDP was supposed to remove.
